SEL ensures that learners become empowered, resilient, and kind citizens once they leave the comfort of your classroom.<\/p>\n<p>A great way to visualize SEL is using the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (<a href=\"https:\/\/casel.org\/fundamentals-of-sel\/what-is-the-casel-framework\/\">CASEL<\/a>) framework, which includes the following SEL skills:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Social awareness<\/li>\n<li>Self-awareness and self-management (including emotional skills, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindful.org\/meditation\/mindfulness-getting-started\/\">mindfulness<\/a>, and mental health well-being)<\/li>\n<li>Relationship skills<\/li>\n<li>Responsible decision making<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><br \/>Let\u2019s break them down&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- .et_pb_text --><\/div>\n<!-- .et_pb_column --><\/div>\n<!-- .et_pb_row -->\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h5>Social Awareness<\/h5>\n<p>Social awareness is a really important part of learners\u2019 emotional development. It\u2019s all about empathy for those within and beyond the elementary school, middle school, or high school gates. It\u2019s about listening to and respecting the ideas and opinions of people from all different backgrounds and understanding the importance of their voices. Being socially aware directly combats societal inequity and increases inclusivity both inside and outside your classroom.<\/p>\n<p>So how can you bring this into your learning curriculum? Easy! Here\u2019s some inspo for you:<\/p>\n<p>Next time you ask students a question, get them to consider what young people, other than themselves, might answer \u2013 how does it differ from their own view? Why?<\/p>\n<p>When delivering content, consider reflecting on how the information could be more or less relevant to learners from different socio-economic backgrounds. SEL lessons teach learners to use social-emotional skills when responding to challenges \u2013 maintaining core values of honesty, integrity, and wellness.<\/p>\n<p>Stuck for ideas? Consider the contexts in which self-awareness has been vital. For example, the pandemic has been a challenging time for you teaching heroes and learners alike. Get your students to reflect on how lockdown made them feel and how they coped:<\/p>\n<p>What were some of the most difficult challenges?<\/p>\n<p>How did they remain resilient?<\/p>\n<p>Could their strategies help others?<\/p>\n<p>Self-aware learners create a positive school climate; a positive school climate reduces the need for interventions and improves academic performance and academic achievement \u2013 happy days! During their time at school, learners will be exposed to several learning environments where they\u2018ll need to work collaboratively. They\u2018ll need to communicate effectively, develop positive partnerships, and seek and offer help to people they\u2018re working with.<\/p>\n<p>How can you use SEL programs to improve learners\u2018 relationship skills? Next time you do group work with your students, get them to:<\/p>\n<p>Assign each group member a specific, measurable, and achievable role.<\/p>\n<p>Discuss their expectations for each team member before beginning the task.<\/p>\n<p>Reflect on how they worked as a group once the task is complete.<\/p>\n<p>Engage in positive, but honest, conversation!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- .et_pb_text --><\/div>\n<!-- .et_pb_column --><\/div>\n<!-- .et_pb_row -->\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h5>Responsible Decision Making<\/h5>\n<p>Making responsible decisions is the last of the SEL competencies. It\u2018s all about demonstrating curiosity and open-mindedness. Learners should be encouraged to:<\/p>\n<p>Make reasoned judgments after closely considering all the information, data, and facts available to them.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipate and consider the consequences of the decisions they make on themselves and others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- .et_pb_text --><\/div>\n<!-- .et_pb_column --><\/div>\n<!-- .et_pb_row -->\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Every decision has consequences and learners should be equipped to make choices that result in the best outcome for all.
