The best way to shape up is to make learning fun. In this blog, we share with you a super fun (and delicious!) way to learn how to work out the volume of a cone. Like chocolate? Read on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>volume of a cone<\/strong>, is the space inside or the capacity of the cone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no \u201cperfect way\u201d to learn. Some people learn well by just observing, but most people have deeper learning by \u201cdoing\u201d or \u201cexperiencing\u201d something. By developing an understanding of something by experiencing it, rather than just being told it is so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ice-cream &amp; Chocolate Sauce Experiment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Engage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In class today, we\u2019re going to have <strong>ice-cream and chocolate sauce!<\/strong> The chocolate sauce serving can either be in a cylinder-shaped cup or a cone-shaped cup. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need to explore which option will give you more chocolate sauce deliciousness, and exactly how MUCH more, or LESS sauce you\u2019ll get, once you\u2019ve made your choice!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kamiapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-26-at-1.53.33-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26131\" width=\"414\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.kamiapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-26-at-1.53.33-PM.png 1018w, https:\/\/wp.kamiapp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-26-at-1.53.33-PM-300x125.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Explore<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using everyday materials, let\u2019s make some connections to prior knowledge about a cylinder and see what we can learn about a cone.<br><br><strong>What you&#8217;ll need:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>a cylinder shape (glue stick lid)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a cone (we\u2019ll make one using contact plastic)<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your cone and your cylinder need to be the same height and have the same sized circle-shape at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To make the cone:<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Open this Kami doc: <a href=\"https:\/\/kami.app\/GiK-EEN-XGN-hXE\">https:\/\/kami.app\/GiK-EEN-XGN-hXE<\/a><br>Resize the cone net annotation (using the little purple circle in the bottom right of the annotation) to make the blue circle the same size as the circle shape of your glue stick lid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Place a piece of paper over your screen and trace the cone net sector shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cut out 2 sector shapes in plastic contact. It can be helpful to cut a larger flap on one of the sectors. Peel off the paper and stick the sticky sides together. If you didn\u2019t do an extra flap, simply tape the sectors together into a cone shape, with cellotape or an extra piece of pealed contact.<br><br>Now you have a cylinder and a cone shape with the same height and the same circular open top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Explore how much coloured liquid each shape can hold.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which can hold more?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can the one shape hold twice as much as the other?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can the one shape hold 3 times as much as the other?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can the one hold 4 time as much as the other?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>3. Explain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Explain your discoveries about the volume of the cylinder and the cone. You can use a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kamiapp.com\/library\/resources\/k4uUcqPr4T9A-main-idea-supporting-details-blue\">What\u2019s the big idea?<\/a>\u201d or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kamiapp.com\/library?term=science\">Lab report\/Science experiment<\/a>\u201d Kami template.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Elaborate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s build on what we know. Evaluate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the Volume of a Cylinder is 60 \u33a4, the volume of a cone with the same circular base (or top) and same height would be \u2026\u2026.?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a cone has a volume of 15 \u33a4, what is the Volume of the cylinder with the same circular base and height?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wrapping Up<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>After a practical learning experience, it should be easy for you to make <strong>this<\/strong> decision. I\u2019d choose the cylinder-shaped one too. There is more yummy milkshake in that one. Do you remember how MUCH more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Volume<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of space inside a 3D shape is called the &nbsp;volume of the shape.
