About Us

  • Name
  • Here at Kami, we come to work every day because we are on a mission to help you transition to paperless work.

Our millions of users include teachers and students who were previously weighed down by the time, effort, and cost associated with paper documentation.

Now, using Kami, they can achieve more than ever before with interactive classroom learning.

Kami was founded in 2013 by Hengjie Wang, Jordan Thoms, Alliv Samson and Bob Drummond in response to a problem. Today, Kami is backed by Silicon Valley and New Zealand investors including Sam Altman (Y Combinator), Scott Nolan (Founders Fund), Flying Kiwi Angels, and Right Side Capital Management.

Kami is changing the way that teachers and students interact in the classroom

Kami through the years

There are over 5,000,000+ Kami signups

While completing their studies at The University of Auckland, Hengjie, Jordan, and Alliv created a web app called Notable.ac to allow students to take better notes and were recognized as finalists with Bob Drummond as one of their mentors in the university's Spark 100K Challenge (now called Velocity 100K).

With a taste for app creation and a winning team dynamic, the founders revamped what was Notable.ac into Notable PDF – a PDF annotation app. The Beta version was launched in the Chrome App Store and Google Apps Marketplace and reached over 1 million annotations within the first few months.

The trio decided to rebrand Notable PDF to ‘Kami' – meaning ‘paper' in Japanese – to align with their vision for the product and brand. The team was also awarded the New Zealand Innovators Award.

Kami focused its efforts on the education market and by the end of the year, saw its signups increase rapidly from one million to three million, and its annotations rose from 40 million to 110 million. Notably, there were over 4 million app and extension installs in the Google Suite Marketplace and Chrome Web Store.

  • 4 MILLION + 12,000 K-12 SCHOOLS

The Kami community grew to over four million users — more than 500,000 of whom were using Kami every month. The company's education focus continued, with over 12,000 K–12 schools using Kami in the classroom across the United States. The team was also named the American Chamber of Commerce NZ Exporter of the Year.

This year, the Kami community has grown to over five million users. As the user number has grown, so has the diverse team based across the United States, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
