Building the future of education,
one classroom at a time
Kami is an interactive learning platform empowering students and enhancing the way teachers teach, feedback, and assess.
Founded in 2013, Kami’s grown to over
30 million global users, and counting!
What we do
In or out of the classroom, Kami provides tools to support any learning style or ability, drive engagement, and improve learning outcomes for all. With Kami, teachers can spend less time on tedious admin, and more time on what they do best: Fostering a love of learning with their students.
Who we are
Kami is home to the Kami-leons, a diverse and passionate team—from engineers to ex-teachers—all united by a shared goal of making learning fun, impactful, and accessible for every student, no matter their situation.

2013 The beginning
In their final year at university, Hengjie, Jordan, and Alliv created Notable.ac, a note-taking web app. Bob Drummond was a mentor in the University 100K Challenge where the trio was recognized as finalists. Quickly evolving into Notable PDF, an annotation app for PDFs, the platform reached over one million annotations within months.
2015 Creating Kami
With steady growth came the opportunity to rebrand and begin a new chapter as Kami. Meaning “paper” in Japanese, the name Kami aligned with the team’s vision to help users transition to paperless work.
2018 Six million users
The passionate Kami community is now over five million strong! As user numbers grew, so did the team; starting with a few based in Auckland, New Zealand, Kami expanded internationally, reaching the United States, and the Philippines.
2020 The move to remote
Amidst the madness of 2020, we made Kami totally free so teachers and students could keep up, no matter their situation. By May, we were supporting over 10M users and ended the year with over 20M across 180 countries.
2021 A new normal
The team has rapidly doubled in size, with Kami-leons spanning over 5 different countries. For 2021, the focus was on adapting the Kami platform to keep up with the demands and needs of its thriving community. With new advancements, Kami was recognised as the fastest growing company in NZ.
