Here at Kami, we come to work every day with a mission to help our users transition to paperless work. Our 30+ million users include educators and students who were previously weighed down by the time, effort, and cost associated with paper documentation. With Kami, they can achieve more than ever before with interactive classroom learning.
Kami was founded in 2013 by Hengjie Wang, Jordan Thoms, Alliv Samson, and Bob Drummond in response to a problem. Today, Kami is backed by Silicon Valley, New Zealand, and Australian investors including Sam Altman, Scott Nolan, Flying Kiwi Angels, and Right Side Capital Management.
Kami is changing the way that teachers and students interact in the classroom
Kami through the years
Kami is headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand with teams in The United States, Brazil, South Africa, and The Philippines
In their final year at The University of Auckland, Hengjie, Jordan, and Alliv created Notable.ac, a better notetaking web app for students. Bob Drummond was a mentor in the University 100K Challenge where the trio was recognized as finalists.
With a drive for app creation and a winning team dynamic, the founders pivoted into Notable PDF, an annotation app for PDFs. The Beta version was launched in the Chrome App Store and Google Apps Marketplace and reached over one million annotations within several months.
The trio decided to rebrand Notable PDF to Kami—meaning “paper” in Japanese—to align with their vision for the product and brand. Kami also received the New Zealand Innovators Award in late 2015.
110 Million Annotations
Kami focused its efforts on the education market. We grew to three million users and over 110 million, with four million installs from the Google Suite Marketplace and Chrome Web Store.
Four Million Users
Our community grew to over four million users; more than 500,000 of whom were using Kami every month. Kami’s education focus continued with over 12,000 K–12 schools using Kami in the classroom across the United States. Kami was also awarded the American Chamber of Commerce NZ Exporter of the Year.
Six Million and Growing, Fast!
This year, the Kami community has grown to over five million users. As the user number has grown, so has the diverse team based across the United States, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
