A research-backed study conducted in collaboration with an independent educational research firm examined the impact of Kami on student literacy in Moreno Valley Unified School District. By analyzing student performance on the STAR Reading benchmark assessment, the study revealed measurable gains for students consistently using Kami, particularly among English Language Learners (ELLs). This case study highlights how the district leveraged Kami to drive measurable improvements in literacy development, including reading comprehension and engagement.

Understanding the Literacy Landscape in Moreno Valley

In Moreno Valley Unified School District, educators are deeply committed to meeting the needs of each student, recognizing that many students face unique challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Serving a diverse community, with nearly 20% of students identified as English Language Learners (ELLs) and a significant number coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the district’s teachers work to understand and support the diverse backgrounds of their students. They consistently seek innovative ways to provide personalized learning experiences that foster literacy and academic growth.

Navigating Literacy Challenges in a Diverse Classroom

Moreno Valley teachers encountered a familiar educational challenge: raising reading achievement among diverse learners who require varied instructional approaches. Many students came from backgrounds where educational support and resources were less accessible, which heightened the importance of targeted, personalized instruction. Improving literacy outcomes required a solution that could engage all students consistently while allowing teachers to easily provide tailored support without feeling overwhelmed.

How Kami Transformed Literacy Instruction

Kami became an essential part of classroom instruction in Moreno Valley, transforming how teachers delivered literacy lessons. Educators utilized Kami’s interactive features to increase student engagement and facilitate deeper comprehension. The platform enabled educators to differentiate instruction seamlessly, addressing the needs of each student precisely when they needed support. Classrooms became spaces of active collaboration and focused learning, as students spent more meaningful time interacting with texts and engaging with their peers.

The Impact of Kami: Measurable Literacy Gains

The dedication of Moreno Valley’s teachers, supported by Kami, led to measurable improvements in student literacy. Research showed that students who used Kami daily demonstrated up to a 4 percentile point increase in their performance on the STAR Reading benchmark assessment, reinforcing the effectiveness of consistent engagement with Kami’s tools. The impact was even greater for English Language Learners (ELLs), who experienced up to an 8 percentile point increase in reading ability, helping to bridge critical literacy gaps.

Additionally, the study found that students who engaged with Kami’s tools for longer session durations saw more significant gains compared to those with minimal interaction. These findings underscore how active engagement with Kami fosters deeper comprehension and supports long-term academic success.

These results highlight the powerful combination of innovative technology and the dedication of Moreno Valley’s educators in fostering literacy growth and academic success.
